Net Zero Go says:

This report estimates that electrifying UK police fleets will require around 18,285 chargers across 2,035 sites at a cost of roughly £1.4 billion, with grid upgrades accounting for 83% of expenditure. The study highlights the importance of phased delivery, telematics-led planning, smart charging and early engagement with network operators to reduce costs and manage operational risks.

For local authorities, the key message is that grid capacity and infrastructure planning matter more than charger hardware alone. The report shows how shared charging hubs and collaboration between emergency services and councils could reduce costs, with cluster analysis indicating potential UK-wide grid upgrade savings through coordinated infrastructure planning.

Police fleet electrification and infrastructure across the UK

What will it take to transition police fleets across the UK to electric vehicles?

Commissioned by the Midlands Net Zero Hub and delivered by Dynamon, this report provides the first national assessment of the charging infrastructure, grid upgrades, and investment required to support police fleet electrification across the UK. The study draws on telematics-led analysis, force-level assessments, and national modelling to understand the scale of the challenge facing policing and the wider energy system.

The report estimates that electrifying UK police fleets will require approximately 18,285 charge points across more than 2,000 police sites, representing an infrastructure investment of around £1.4 billion. One of the most significant findings is that grid reinforcement and electrical upgrades account for the majority of costs, approximately 83% of the total investment requirement, highlighting the critical role of electricity network planning in fleet decarbonisation.

The research explores:

  • National charging infrastructure requirements
  • The mix of standard, rapid, and ultra-rapid charging needed
  • Grid capacity and reinforcement requirements
  • Infrastructure costs and delivery challenges
  • Regional and shared charging opportunities
  • Blue-light operational considerations
  • The role of telematics and smart fleet management
  • Strategic recommendations for government, police forces, and network operators

The report also examines opportunities for collaboration between police forces, emergency services, and public sector organisations to reduce infrastructure costs through shared approaches to grid connections and charging infrastructure. Case studies from Nottinghamshire, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire demonstrate potential savings through coordinated infrastructure planning.

The findings provide valuable evidence for organisations involved in fleet decarbonisation, infrastructure planning, energy networks, public sector investment, and transport electrification, helping to inform future decision-making and support the transition to Net Zero.

Who is this for?

This report provides a national evidence base for organisations planning electric vehicle infrastructure and fleet decarbonisation programmes. It is particularly relevant for local authorities, emergency services, public sector fleet managers, energy network operators, transport planners, and organisations developing EV infrastructure investment strategies.
