Using visual tools and real data, householders can better understand how their home is performing and be motivated towards retrofit.
The Local Energy Advice Demonstrator (LEAD) programme trialled innovative approaches for delivering retrofit advice to hard-to-reach groups and hard-to-treat homes. This resource provides a summary of insights into one of the methods trialled by the South West Net Zero Hub within one or several of its six projects.
Visual and data tools: How the method works
Visual tools help householders understand heat loss and retrofit needs. Thermal imaging highlights cold spots indoors, such as uninsulated areas or cold bridging, while smoke pencils reveal draughts around windows or timbers. More advanced tools like blower doors and mobile fans measure air tightness and can be used alongside thermal imaging. Long-term sensor testing over three weeks provides real-world data on heat loss, humidity, and air quality – offering a clearer picture than theoretical EPC ratings. These tools make retrofit issues visible and help motivate informed decisions.
