The Local Energy Advice Demonstrator (LEAD) programme trialled innovative approaches for delivering retrofit advice to hard-to-reach groups and hard-to-treat homes. This resource provides a summary of insights into one of the methods trialled by the South West Net Zero Hub within one or several of its six projects.

Community outreach: How the method works

Community outreach involves engaging people where they already are, through trusted individuals and familiar settings, rather than relying on them to seek out services. It’s widely used in the community energy sector, though success depends on understanding the target audience. Outreach methods include stalls at public events, drop-in advice sessions in places like libraries or GP surgeries, and talks at community meetings. Delivery can be by staff or trained volunteers who offer basic advice and signposting. Partnering with community groups and volunteers is often cost-effective and well-received, especially when aligned with shared goals.

Consult the full LEAD method summary on community outreach – linked above and below – for information on why the method works and what you’ll need, as well as an accompanying case study and top tips should you wish to use this method. To finish off, there is also a list of additional resources, such as webinars, online courses, and any other tools or guidance relevant to this method.
