Following the regional Retrofit Skills Pilot project, the Retrofit Skills Plan aims to identify, then implement, the necessary steps to develop local supply chain capacity to retrofit homes across the UK and meet Net Zero by 2050.
A significant increase in skilled workers is required to retrofit homes across the UK and meet Net Zero by 2050.
To help address the skills gap, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) launched a £5.3 million Regional Skills Pilot project delivered by the five Local Net Zero Hubs in England.
The objective was to create a Net Zero building Retrofit Skills Plan and identify, then implement, the necessary steps to develop local supply chain capacity to carry out energy efficiency improvements in homes to meet national Net Zero targets.
GSENZH’s regional Retrofit Skills Pilot and resulting Retrofit Skills Plan
The Greater South East Retrofit Skills Plan was produced to assess the current state of the retrofit workforce and identify the necessary steps to develop the local workforce to be able to achieve Net Zero targets. The Plan was created as part of the DESNZ Retrofit Skills Pilot scheme.
The Greater South East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH), having been awarded with £1.5 million, took a place-based approach to the project and awarded funding to:
- East Sussex Council
- Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership
- South London Partnership
- Surrey County Council
- Buckinghamshire Business First
The project was delivered in two phases:
- Creation of tailored retrofit skills plans for each area.
- Deliver the activities set out in the skills plans.
The project had a significant impact, including:
- Creation of five regional retrofit skills plans.
- Awareness campaigns reaching 28,000+ stakeholders.
- 500+ training places and qualifications provided.
- 2 retrofit web platforms created.
- 1 local roadmap created.
- 13 events held with 1,000+ attendees ranging from students to businesses, educators, public sector employees, and general public.
