Being more aware of how much energy your organisation uses and when can help it become more energy efficient.

Smart meters, the next generation of gas and electricity meters, are an enabling technology solution that bring an end to manual meter reads and estimated billing. They also drive novel approaches to managing energy consumption.

Public sector sites, including local authorities and schools across Great Britain, are already benefitting from the use of smart meters, allowing them to take control of their energy use and adapt their behaviours to save money and lower their carbon emissions.

Organisations with smart meters

  • They can request, or nominate a third party to receive, their historic smart meter energy use files for free from their energy supplier to inform decisions relating to their energy use.
  • From 1st October 2024, smaller organisations with smart meters will receive free and regular information on their energy use, based on their smart meter data.

To have a smart meter installed, you should speak to your energy supplier, framework provider, or third-party intermediary, and they will set the process in motion.
