This document is for guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Please refer to a legal specialist when entering into any contractual or licensing arrangement.

The aim of this licence is to provide a legal framework for organisations to share data with and between each other.

This licence has been developed to allow data to be shared between parties for any purpose (including commercial) whilst adding some restrictions on onward sharing of the original data.

The licence is designed to be modular, so that elements can be used as necessary. Participants are encouraged to use, or not use, the modules depending on how stringent they wish to be. At a minimum, the conditions section provides the basis for sharing data between parties that can be used and manipulated to create results freely by the receiver.

The licence is split into the following sections:

  • Contract details: Use this section for formal data sharing agreements between parties that have details of a specific project data set.
  • The conditions: Contains conditions to allow data sharing where parties are protected from liability.
  • The mandatory policies: Use this section to specify any mandatory policies that the parties agree to, such as personal data protection.
  • The schedules: Use this section to specify overarching principles which include any restrictions, specific project details, or other principles that the parties agree to.
